Fundamental Molecular Concepts

  • Molecular diagnostics are based on the detection of specific sequences of nucleic acid contained in microorganisms
  • There are two types of nucleic acid molecules, which are composed of strands of bases linked end-to-end
    • DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
      • Double stranded; forms the double helix structure with matching base pairs
    • A-T C-G
    • RNA (ribonucleic acid)
      • Single stranded
  • DNA is the information storage molecule in all living cells and is the primary component of chromosomes
  • RNA is the intermediate "messenger" that carries and translates the information for construction of a functional protein
