Fundamental Molecular Concepts
Molecular diagnostics are based on the detection of specific sequences of nucleic acid contained in microorganisms
There are two types of nucleic acid molecules, which are composed of strands of
bases
linked end-to-end
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
Double stranded; forms the double helix structure with matching base pairs
A-T C-G
RNA (ribonucleic acid)
Single stranded
DNA is the information storage molecule in all living cells and is the primary component of chromosomes
RNA is the intermediate "messenger" that carries and translates the information for construction of a functional protein
